Tips and recommendations for house breaking your puppy in the winter

Tips and recommendations for house breaking your puppy in the winter
  1. Limit your puppy’s space. Keep your puppy in a small playpen, gated area or crate.  The puppy should be taken outside to his “potty area” regularly and after potty-triggering events.  The potty-triggering events include waking up, eating and drinking.

  2. Use the same spot and clear it of snow. Create a potty space in the snow or slush. Take him immediately to that spot whenever you take him outside to potty.
  1. Bundle up! Use a dog sweater or coat when taking your puppy outside to potty.  This not only keeps your puppy warm but also helps him realize that he is going outside.  Poshpuppyboutique.com has great sweaters and outerwear for puppies and dogs.  They are also offering 20% off just for signing up for their mailing list.

  2. Teach a cue: A verbal cue to potty is very important. It can be a command such as “go potty”. After placing your puppy in the potty space, he will start sniffing and circling.  As soon as you see your puppy getting ready to potty, say the verbal cue.  He will soon connect the command with going potty time!

  3. Reward: Puppies should be rewarded for eliminating in the right place.  Rewards can be treats, playtime or lots of affection.  Whatever it is, use it every time your puppy potties in the potty area.

  4. Use an odor eliminator: Puppies will have accidents  A favorite odor eliminator and stain remover is Paw Sense Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator from Grove Collaborative.
